FIA confirms qualifying system modification

F1 teams and FIA found an accord last Tuesday at Geneva to radically change the qualifying system.

Formula One is about to know a drastic change in the qualifying sessions system which will more be more similar to direct elimination. It will take place in the Grand Prix of Melbourne in Australia, March 20^th.

Q1 will last 16 minutes. After 7 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated. Every 90 seconds, the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag. 7 drivers are eliminated in Q1, 15 make it to Q2.

Q2 will last 15 minutes. After 6 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated. Every 90 seconds, the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag. 7 drivers are eliminated, 8 make it to Q3.

Q3 will last 14 minutes. After 5 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated. Every 90 seconds, the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag. The two drivers remaining have 90 seconds to fight for pole.
