Fernando Alonso and his decision about the future in F1

Fernando Alonso, the veteran Aston Martin driver, has indicated that he will make a decision about his future in Formula 1 during the summer break, as speculation about his retirement grows. At 44 years of age, the Spanish driver is competing in his 23rd season, having debuted in 2001, and has accumulated two championship victories and 32 Grand Prix wins.

Alonso’s contract ends at the conclusion of the 2026 season and, following a disappointing start with the new regulations, the team currently finds itself in last place in the standings, with no points in the first three races of the year. Despite the difficulties with the current vehicle, Alonso remains focused on the current edition of the competition.

Before the Miami Grand Prix, Alonso explained that, while maintaining regular conversations with team owner Lawrence Stroll, they have not yet discussed his immediate future in depth. “I haven’t started thinking about my future yet. I know that this summer, or just after, I will have to make a decision,” the driver stated.

If he decides to leave F1, it would be the second time he retires after his exit from McLaren at the end of 2018. Alonso is seeking to ensure that his career does not end on a sour note and expresses his desire to compete as long as he remains competitively fast.

Alonso has expressed that, regardless of his decision, he wants to stay connected to the motorsport world, with interests including his participation in other forms of competition, such as Dakar and endurance racing. “If I decide not to continue in F1, I know that I will keep racing in other competitions. I would like to win in more categories and leave at a good moment,” he concluded.
