Mercedes junior and ART Grand Prix’s George Russell claimed pole in the FIA Formula 2 Championship at Monza beating Carlin’s Sergio Sette Camara.
The Brazilian took provisional pole with a 1m32.052s from Russell who clocked a 1m32.222s at the halfway mark in the session. However, the second and the final run changed the course as Russell had the upperhand this time.
The British driver took his fourth pole of the season with a 1m31.546s lap time to beat Camara (1m31.600s) by 0.054s in a tight session with DAMS’ Alexander Albon (1m31.889s) in fourth and Russian Time’s Artem Markelov (1m31.922s) fifth.
The Top 4 were the only ones to dip into the 1m31s barrier. It was a good session for DAMS as Nicholas Latifi (1m32.021s) finished fifth from Charouz Racing System’s Antonio Fuoco (1m32.159s) with title contender Carlin’s Lando Norris (1m32.191s) only seventh.
The British driver is once again dovetailing the weekend with McLaren’s FP1 run. Meanwhile, Trident’s Arjun Maini (1m32.248s) improved to eighth from 16th on his final attempt.
The Top 10 was rounded out by Campos’ Luca Ghiotto (1m32.346s) and Charouz’s Louis Deletraz (1m32.407s) with Prema’s Nyck de Vries having a tough session to be 11th ahead of ART’s Jack Aitken.
Position 11-20: De Vries, Aitken, Nirei Fukuzumi, Tadasuke Makino, Roy Nissany, Alessio Lorandi, Sean Gelael, Ralph Boschung, Maximilian Gunther and Dorian Boccolacci.
