Andrea Stella, head of the McLaren Formula 1 team, has expressed his support for the FIA following the software failures that disrupted the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix, held in Malaysia. Despite the inconveniences, Stella acknowledged that these incidents are inherent to the new regulations.
During the race, the situation at the Sepang circuit became complicated when a considerable number of vehicles suffered a glitch that left them unresponsive to throttle during the formation laps. This technical problem occurred in the first Grand Prix in the history of the category that was run in the rain, resulting in a 50-minute wait before the resumption of the competition.
Despite the complications, Stella defended the work of Formula 1 and the FIA to adapt to the new regulations. According to him, ‘we must acknowledge that there has been good work done to make the races exciting. If there are glitches from time to time, we have to accept it as it’s a challenge for everyone.’
The McLaren team, which saw its drivers affected, has emphasized the importance of learning from these mistakes to avoid another similar episode. Stella highlighted that, as a competitor, accepting some technical complications is part of the sport and that one must be prepared to make the necessary corrections.
For his part, Nikolas Tombazis, FIA single-seater director, has assured that the organization will work to prevent incidents like those experienced in Sepang from recurring in the future, although he acknowledges that minor problems may still arise.
