F1 together with the FIA is thankful of the increased and improved safety standards in the sport after the big Monaco GP shunt.
It was indeed a heavy incident on Lap 1 of F1 Monaco GP where Haas’ Kevin Magnussen tried to go inside of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez at Turn 2-3 sequence but their wheels touched and they made contact which resulted in a pile-up to cause a red flag.
Perez’s car was dragged across by Magnussen which rammed into the barrier where photographers and marshals were present. They took Nico Hulkenberg along, while Stake F1 Team’s Zhou Guanyu made a slow pass on all post the incident.
While Perez, Magnussen and Hulkenberg escaped any injuries, the FIA noted about a photographer taken to the medical center. There was no open wounds and he was let off after inspection, but videos emerged of a horrific scene.
The car came at a speed which took everyone by surprise and little time to evade. Some of the photos and even behind the scenes videos showcased the magnitude and escape. Both F1 and the FIA has expressed thanks for the safety improvements over the years.
“We’re thankful for the energy and commitment from the FIA and the wider motorsport community in the never-ending pursuit of safety across our sport,” read a statement. “That drivers, photographers and those trackside were able to walk away from this crash at the weekend is a testament to the progress that has been made.”
