F1 drivers prepare for more deployment challenges at the Belgian GP

The Formula 1 drivers are already prepared to face new challenges at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, with Fernando Alonso alerting about the possible battery shortage on large sections of the circuit, which could lead to a significant loss of power compared to F2 cars.

The circuit, known for its long straights and demanding climbs, features a layout that may hinder the recycling of battery energy. In this sense, the first section of the track, which runs from La Source to Les Combes, will be crucial for energy management.

As Alonso pointed out, similar to the conditions at Silverstone, Spa represents a major challenge for F1 vehicles due to the lack of suitable braking zones to recharge the batteries during the lap. ‘If you deploy from La Source to Les Combes, you’ll be in trouble for the rest of the lap,’ the driver warned.

Whenever F1 cars make the increasingly frequent energy deployment, their power can reach about 1000 hp. However, without the ability to recharge the batteries, the available power will fall below that of F2 cars.

The drivers agree that Spa is one of the most complex tracks in this regard, placing it alongside Silverstone, Monza, and Suzuka. As one driver said, this circuit can also become a ‘charging station’ where energy management will be crucial. Expectations are building ahead of the upcoming Grand Prix, with all drivers prepared to navigate around this energy challenge.

As the situation evolves, Formula 1 is working to address this issue for both the current season and for future modifications set to be introduced from 2027 and 2028, with a gradual reduction of dependence on deployment energy.
