George Russell starred in a spectacular qualifying session at the Australian GP of Formula 1, securing pole with an unbeatable time. The Mercedes driver dominated all three qualifying sessions, surpassing his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, by 0.3 seconds in Q3.
Russell recorded a time of 1:18.518, translating to a significant advantage over other competitors like Isack Hadjar, who finished third almost eight tenths behind. The Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc, and the McLaren driver, Oscar Piastri, completed the top five fastest drivers.
However, the session was not easy for everyone. Max Verstappen, multiple-time world champion, had an accident that ended his qualifying prematurely. Less than eight minutes from the end of Q1, the Red Bull Racing driver lost control of his car in the first turn, causing a red flag that halted the session.
Before the crash, Verstappen had set a time that placed him fourth, but his incident meant he ended up without any valid time before the session was stopped. With his teammate in trouble, the qualifying became complicated for drivers like Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll, both without recorded times due to technical issues.
During Q2, Russell maintained his dominance, marking the first time below the 19-minute barrier for that weekend, with a time of 1:18.934. Lewis Hamilton and Esteban Ocon fought to avoid elimination, with Hamilton managing to place seventh by the end of the session.
The final round of Q3 was marked by an additional incident related to Antonelli’s car, which caused a delay. Nevertheless, Russell demonstrated his solidity and confirmed his pole position ahead of this thrilling race in Melbourne.
