F1 2024, Bahrain Test: Sainz takes over to top Day 2 from Perez

F1, Carlos Sainz

Carlos Sainz was quickest on Day 2 of F1 2024 Bahrain Test, with Sergio Perez slotting in second and Lewis Hamilton third.

After Red Bull reigned supreme on Day 1 of the F1 2024 Bahrain Test, Ferrari bounced back on Day 2 where Sainz set the pace on the C4 compound. He posted a 1m29.921s lap, undertaking 84 laps in all ahead of Perez, who set his best lap on the C3 compound.

He did a 1m30.679s lap, completing 129 laps but he did not readily have a clean run. His day included couple of issues on the car side which Red Bull could fix up quickly to still allow for a handsome number of laps, much like Max Verstappen on Day 1.

Mercedes’ Hamilton was third with a 1m31.066s lap on the C3 compound, with 123 laps against his name. While Sainz set his best time in the afternoon session, both Perez and Hamilton had full day to them to complete a nice haul of laps as seen.

McLaren’s Lando Norris drove in the afternoon session to be fourth from Visa Cash App RB’s Daniel Ricciardo, who was another to set his best time on the C4 compound. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was sixth despite running only in the morning session.

He did have a run in the afternoon too after the lunch was taken early and the afternoon session extended by a hour. It was after Leclerc ran over a lose drain cover at the exit of Turn 11. He ran over it twice after Hamilton too had a go at it.

The session was red-flagged and ended early for lunch as the promoters fixed the issue, while Ferrari had to resort to a spare chassis. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll was seventh from Alpine’s Esteban Ocon and Stake F1 Team’s Valtteri Bottas – all running in the afternoon.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri rounded the Top 10 after running in the morning. Williams’ Logan Sargeant was 11th after running solely for the team. Although he accumulated 117 laps, the team did have couple of issues which they were able to resolve.

Among the morning runners, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso slotted in 12th from Stake F1 Team’s Zhou Guanyu and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly. Haas’ Kevin Magnussen ran in the afternoon this time to be 15th from teammate Nico Hulkenberg, as Visa Cash App RB’s Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the 17 runners.

The FIA had a Virtual Safety Car, Safety Car and Red Flag test towards the end, which included a rolling start practice where the likes of Hamilton, Norris, Bottas, Ocon, Magnussen and Perez were involved.
