Lando Norris led Oscar Piastri in FP1 of F1 Dutch GP upon return from summer break, as they had good lead over Lance Stroll in third.
It got cloudy as the FP1 session progressed in F1 Dutch GP at Circuit Zandvoort. It was not easy for most drivers, who put a wheel on the gravel at various corners. Three of them were caught out in a sequence of couple of minutes. First up was Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in the banked corner.
He did a 360 degrees upon the entry when he lost control of his rear. Likewise Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda spun at Turn 12 entry after losing his rear. He had to move through the gravel and managed to unlike Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who was beached after his off at Turn 9.
He couldn’t turn the car and barely escaped the barrier but he was stuck, which ended his session early and caused a red flag. At the front, it was McLaren 1-2 to start FP1 in F1 Dutch GP, where Lando Norris was quickest after his 1m10.278s lap over teammate Oscar Piastri.
Both had their gravel touch moment. The two McLaren pair headed the Aston Martin duo after a late push from Lance Stroll put him in third. The Canadian was initially hampered by Tsunoda, but got going again for his second lap. He was still half a second behind the McLaren, though.
Fernando Alonso was fourth from Williams’ Alexander Albon, with first non-Mercedes powered car was Max Verstappen’s Red Bull in sixth. Mercedes’ George Russell was seventh after his own moment, as Williams’ Carlos Sainz was eighth to round out seven Mercedes-powered car in the Top 8.
Russell had a Turn 1 moment late in the session, but escaped any trouble, while Verstappen was beached at the gravel at Turn 1 after the chequered flag when he undertook a practice start. Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto was ninth from Alpine’s Pierre Gasly in the Top 10.
The pair of Visa Cash App RB missed out on the Top 10, with Liam Lawson ahead of Isack Hadjar in 11th and 12th. The other Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg was 13th after going early on the soft compound. It was not a good time for the Ferrari duo to be only 14th and 15th, with Charles Leclerc ahead of Hamilton.
The Monegasque acknowledged about having bigger issues than fuel usage. Tsunoda was 16th after his first lap on soft tyre was ruined, where he was forced for a second lap on it. He also had a gravel run after the chequered flag. Haas’ Esteban Ocon slotted in 17th from Alpine’s Franco Colapinto, Haas’ Oliver Bearman and Antonelli, to round out the 20 runners.
The Italian only managed six laps before his end. In terms of PU elements, both Ocon and Bearman took their second Energy Store, as did Hulkenberg and Bortoleto.
