Ducati tests its new 850cc MotoGP with good impressions

Ducati has started its testing program for the new 850cc MotoGP prototype with promising results, according to Gigi Dall’Igna, the brand’s general director.

After KTM, Honda, and Yamaha launched their 2027 models, Ducati joined the tests with its motorcycle, conducting a first test on April 13 in Misano. This test was led by test rider Michele Pirro.

Dall’Igna commented that Pirro’s first impressions of the Desmosedici GP27 have been very positive, highlighting that “everything has worked correctly, and the motorcycle is ready for more tests”.

The next tests will take place next week at Mugello, close to the Borgo Panigale factory, with Pirro again in charge of the operation. Dall’Igna confirmed that “we will conduct a test next week”.

Ducati has also renewed the contract of Nicolo Bulega, who will combine his duties in the World Superbike with a role as a MotoGP test rider. His experience with Pirelli tires could prove valuable as MotoGP transitions to this brand in 2027.

During the tests at Mugello, Pirro will have access to an almost complete package that includes the new 850cc engine and aerodynamics, although without height control devices. Additionally, prototype Pirelli tires and a new sustainable fuel developed with Shell will also be tested.

Upcoming events

This weekend, the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez will be followed by the first official test of the season on Monday, with all MotoGP teams participating. The Moto2 and Moto3 categories will take over on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Alongside Ducati, Honda is also scheduled to test next week in Mugello, with Takaaki Nakagami as the test rider after injuries to Aleix Espargaro. On the other hand, Yamaha, KTM, and Aprilia will conduct their tests in Jerez on the Thursday and Friday following the grand prix, taking advantage of the track conditions.

The test in Mugello represents a key stage in Ducati’s preparation for the new era of MotoGP.
