Andrea Dovizioso took his third MotoGP victory at Mugello today after defeating the Yamaha. Maverick Viñales finished second and increases his lead in the world championship. Danilo Petrucci has finished in a surprising third position.
The race started with Valentino Rossi taking the first position, Maverick Viñales falling to the second and Jorge Lorenzo going up to third place after a great start. A lap later, Lorenzo used the sensational speed of the Ducati to take the race lead. Marc Márquez overtook Andrea Dovizioso for the fourth place and joined the fight for the win. Aleix Espargaró was penalysed with a Ride-Through for jump start.
The laps that followed showed a spectacular battle between the Yamaha, the official Ducati, Danilo Petrucci and Marquez. Rossi, Viñales and Lorenzo alternated overtook each other several times with some risky moves. However, the latter began to lose some pace and fell to the fifth position. The Yamaha and Dovizioso were now in the lead and opened some gap with Petrucci.
Lorenzo and Márquez were finally out of the fight, and fought for the fifth place. Ahead, Dovizioso took second place and opened some gap to Rossi, who was approaching Petrucci. Behind, Álvaro Bautista overtook Marquez and Lorenzo to reach the fifth place, while the Ducati rider fell to the eighth, as he was also beaten by Johann Zarco.
During the last ten laps, the top four had regrouped and Dovizioso went on to lead the race for the first time. The Ducati opened a gap of seven tenths while Petrucci overtook Rossi and attacked Viñales. The distance was reduced again and Petrucci finally became second. Again, Rossi seemed to be one step below the rest. Dovizioso opened a lead of more than a second over Viñales, who had regained second place.
The World Cup leader was faster than Dovizioso, but he did not have enough time to catch up with him. On the last lap, Cal Crutchlow and Pedrosa touched and fell. Dovizioso took his third MotoGP victory and the first for him and for Ducati this year. It is also, of his three triumphs in the premier class, the first in dry conditions.
Viñales has finished second and increases his lead in the World Championship. Petrucci gets his second podium in the World Championship in front of his fans. The top10 is completed by: Rossi, Bautista, Marquez, Zarco, Lorenzo, Pirro and Iannone.
These results leave Viñales on top with 105 points. Dovizioso climbs to second with 79, while Rossi has 75 and Marquez and Pedrosa are tied with 68. Next race will be held in Catalonia next weekend.
