Stefano Domenicali has stepped down as Ferrari team principal following bad results for the Italian team. He should be replaced by Marco Mattiacci, president of Ferrari North America.
Stefano Domenicali has handed in his resignation as Ferrari team principal this Monday with immediate effect. The 48-year-old Italian had been on duty since 2008, after taking on Jean Todt’s position as Director of the Ferrari F1 team.
Domenicali is set to be replaced by Marco Mattiacci, current president of Ferrari North America.
This announcement comes as the Italian team is struggling in the beginning of the 2014 season. Neither Fernando Alonso nor Kimi Raikkönën have been able to secure a podium finish in the three first races.
Under Domenicali’s leadership, Ferrari only managed to win a Constructor’s championship in 2008. Felipe Massa came close to winning the Drivers’ championship that year but eventually lost out to Lewis Hamilton. In 2010, 2012 and 2013, Fernando Alonso narrowly missed out the Drivers’ title to Sebastian Vettel. Last season Ferrari finished 3d with 354 points.
The next race will take place this week end in China on Shangai International Circuit.
