During the early laps of Spa-Francorchamps GP2 Series Race 1, Daniël de Jong suffered a heavy accident at Blacnhimont turn with Pierre Gasly. The Dutch underwent a four-hour sugery.

That’s what GP2 Series said on his statement about Daniël’s condition:

After MP Motorsport’s Daniël De Jong was taken to Liège hospital yesterday following his accident during the feature race, it was found that the Dutch driver had one broken vertebrae (the sixth) which needed immediate attention.

The four hour surgery went well and his situation is stable. Daniël will remain in Liège hospital next week.

Daniël’s family and the MP Motorsport team would like to thank the medical team that treated him with success. They would also like to thank their colleagues, the GP2 drivers and teams and the Series organisers for their support.

GP2 Series would like to wish Daniël a speedy recovery.

Pierre Gasly who cause that accident and gave a 10 seconds-penalty quoted:

“To be fair I wasn’t looking in the mirror, I was already looking at Blanchimont and I didn’t leave him enough space. When I saw the footage again from the inside of the car it’s always different, especially at that speed in that corner. It was a big one and it could have been much worse.

“I have to say I am sorry for him. Hopefully he can be back in the car soon.”

Gasly was penalized for the incident with a 10-second time penalty. According to a GP2 statement, the stewards ruled that Gasly “moved to the right of the track colliding with de Jong. The latter had a significant portion of the car alongside Gasly.
