Driver David Malukas delivered a driving showcase at the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, where he achieved an unexpected third position after starting the race from the last spot.
At just 24 years old, Malukas’ audacity was put to the test when he faced a nine-place grid penalty for an unapproved engine change. Additionally, during the early practice sessions, he suffered an accident that led to his hospitalization, where he was diagnosed with a knee bruise. Malukas could not participate in the qualifying, which relegated him to start the race in 25th position, in a complicated combination.
Despite the adversities, Malukas’ team organized an aggressive strategy during the race. By taking advantage of the first yellow flag, he secured a strategic position and surged back to second place at the restart on lap 31. Two laps later, he took the lead, passing Louis Foster from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, and pulled away from Scott McLaughlin, his teammate at Team Penske.
Malukas built a comfortable lead during the early stages of the race, but his good run was affected on lap 123 when a new yellow flag came out shortly after a pit stop, forcing him to battle with traffic once again. However, his determination carried him back to third place before crossing the finish line.
“Oh my God, this was a team effort,” Malukas said after the race. “I have never driven this hard in my life. I needed proper recovery after the incident I had. I want to thank John, my physiotherapist. Every time I’m not in the car, he massages me to activate my muscles. Huge thanks to the entire team and the local medical staff.”
With this performance, Malukas has moved back into second place in the championship, now 83 points behind leader Alex Palou, who has accumulated 457 points. Competition is set to be intense in the upcoming races.
