David Malukas maintains his pursuit of victory after a second place at Road America

David Malukas, driver for Team Penske, continues to seek his first victory in the IndyCar Series, after finishing second in the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. With this podium, Malukas has achieved his third podium in the last five races.

In a race marked by uncertainty, the 24-year-old driver from Chicago showed his ability to handle the chaos on the 4.014-mile, 14-turn circuit. “It was a chaotic race, but fortunately we were on the right side of the chaos,” Malukas commented, referring to the five caution flag stops during the 55-lap race.

Malukas praised his team’s strategy, while acknowledging that he needs to analyze his own performance. “I need to review why I am losing time in these races. I am experiencing a similar situation to the Indy GP in May,” he added. Despite the cooler weather conditions, the team released a well-tuned vehicle.

The race was defined in an intense final lap, after leader Marcus Armstrong suffered a mechanical issue. Christian Lundgaard took advantage of this opportunity to take the lead, and Malukas, running on hard tires, could not defend against Lundgaard’s attack, who had softer tires. “It was a clear difference in tires,” Malukas admitted.

This result places Malukas in a good position in the championship standings, sitting second with 314 points, 60 behind leader Alex Palou. The driver expressed a mix of frustration and hope: “I am slowly building towards victory, but we need to stay focused on the championship fight. Every race is different, and we still have plenty of opportunities to move forward”.
