David Croft’s Criticism of Lewis Hamilton for Costly Errors in F1

In recent days, Sky Sports’ Formula 1 lead commentator, David Croft, has expressed his concern over the “careless errors” made by Lewis Hamilton during the latest races. These mistakes have led the British driver to accumulate several penalties that have affected his performance on track.

After a disappointing season with Ferrari last year, Hamilton has made a remarkable comeback this season, positioning himself second in the drivers’ standings with 169 points, just 50 behind the championship leader, Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes. Moreover, he secured his first victory with Scuderia Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalonia Grand Prix in June.

However, his latest effort at the Hungarian Grand Prix did not go as he expected. Hamilton finished fifth and received two penalties over the weekend. On the _Sky Sports F1 Show_, Croft emphasized the mistakes Hamilton has made recently.

“His second stint was not good at all. I wonder if this was because he was behind the Racing Bulls, which may have affected his tires,” reflected Croft about Hamilton’s performance at the Hungaroring. “But it got worse. And then Lewis made it even harder with another careless mistake. We shouldn’t present the debate about Ferrari’s strategy in isolation. Lewis is making careless errors now.”

Croft listed a series of penalties Hamilton has recently faced, such as a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane in Monaco and another penalty at Silverstone for moving before the start signal. He also received penalties at Spa and a three-place grid penalty for obstructing Oscar Piastri during qualifying.

Ferrari took responsibility for the three-place penalty at the Hungarian Grand Prix, insisting that they informed Hamilton too late about Piastri’s arrival. However, Croft pointed out that Hamilton should have been more vigilant about what was happening around him. “He should have been looking in his mirrors,” he stated. “You can’t throw away good positions by making these kinds of errors. I don’t want to be too harsh on Lewis. I think he’s the greatest of all time, but these are not the types of mistakes that a driver with his experience should be making.”
