David Coulthard, former Formula 1 driver, has expressed his opinion on the recent vibration issues facing the Aston Martin team. According to him, these vibrations could have a greater impact on the reliability of the vehicles than on the comfort of the drivers.
Aston Martin has started the season with difficulties, particularly with its new collaboration with Honda and the first vehicle designed by Adrian Newey. Despite high expectations, the team has encountered reliability issues and vibrations.
One of the team’s drivers, Fernando Alonso, had to retire from the Chinese Grand Prix due to excessive vibrations in the cockpit. The Spanish driver commented that he began to lose feeling in his hands and feet before his retirement.
In an episode of his podcast Up To Speed, Coulthard argued that vibrations might not affect the drivers as much as is believed. He recalled his personal experience with vibrations in competitions, highlighting that many drivers would continue racing to score points despite these discomforts.
The father (former executive) of Red Bull made an interesting comparison, stating that workers using pneumatic hammers did not stop working to avoid hand pain. Furthermore, he suggested that perhaps all this serves to divert attention from Honda’s issues.
Coulthard concluded that, in his opinion, vibrations represent a greater challenge for vehicle reliability than for the drivers themselves, emphasizing the drivers’ ability to adapt to difficult conditions.
