David Coulthard, former Formula 1 driver, has shown his support for the return of V8 engines to the championship, scheduled for 2031. This position is based on the promises of the FIA, led by President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who has expressed his intention to reintegrate these engines even a year before the established deadline.
According to Sulayem, the regulations will allow for the implementation of V8s without the need for approval from the engine manufacturers. “It’s a measure that will take place in 2031, but we will strive to achieve it a year earlier given the interest expressed from the outside,” he stated to the press.
In the context of an episode of the podcast ‘Up To Speed’, Coulthard and Will Buxton agreed on the need for this change, which meets the demands of fans and drivers. Coulthard mentions: “V8 engines represent an essential part of our history in the championship, and their return would be great news for the fans.”
Furthermore, Coulthard highlighted the possibility of developing engines that can run on biofuels and have zero emissions, emphasizing that, unlike current electrification technologies, V8 engines could be 100% recyclable. “This is a fundamental aspect that deserves consideration in the future of Formula 1,” he added.
