With the updated Renault engine, Daniel Ricciardo dominated the second free-practice session, either on a flying lap or on a long run. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg follow the Australian in the rankings.
As soon as the session started, Pascal Wehrlein went out on track to learn it after his lack of running this morning. Only seven minutes into the session, Romain Grosjean lost the rear in the braking zone after the tunnel. The virtual safety car appeared as debris had to be taken off the track.
The first non-Mercedes driver to get the fastest lap was Daniel Ricciardo after 15 minutes, 0.174 second faster than Hamilton. Both Toro Rosso cars looked fast as both drivers were in the top 5 as well.
At the twenty-second minute, Rio Haryanto violently hit the wall after the tunnel and after only five minutes of virtual safety car, the session went under way without needing a red flag.
As usual in FP2, the session was devoted to long runs to test the different sets of tyres and after half an hour, Jolyon Palmer was the only one who had not set a lap time yet. Kimi Raikkonen was the first Ferrari to make a mistake at Sainte Dévote, locking up in the run-off area. After his mistake earlier in the session, Grosjean went out on track again for the second half of the session.
Ricciardo, meanwhile, set the three purple sectors to have a fastest time with a 1:14.607. Sebastian Vettel although, spun at Mirabeau and damaged his rear-wing.
With 25 minutes to go, Kevin Magnussen hit the wall straight at Antony Noghès. The first images of the contact could remind one of an ERS failure. His car was removed without the intervention of virtual safety car. The rest of the session happened without incidents.
Daniel Ricciardo ended the session in the lead with a 1:14.607 laptime, 0.606s faster than Lewis Hamilton and 0.899s faster of Nico Rosberg. Max Verstappen, Daniil Kvyat, Carlos Sainz Jr, Kimi Raikkonen, Sergio Perez, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button completed the top 10.
