Damon Hill highlights the tactics of the Japanese GP

The 1996 Formula 1 champion, Damon Hill, has highlighted that the recent Japanese GP has shown an interesting and tactical level of competition, despite some drivers being dissatisfied with the new regulations set for 2026.

These new regulations involve, among other things, the need to reduce speed to charge the batteries, a measure that has drawn criticism from professionals and fans. However, Hill defended the appeal of this dynamic on the track, emphasizing the strategic intelligence it requires. “I think the race is very interesting and tactical. The drivers have to think, and we are being entertained,” he stated to F1 TV.

The early events of the 2026 season have shown a change in the dynamics of the races. For example, the Australian GP recorded an impressive total of 120 overtakes, compared to 45 in the previous edition. Hill noted that it’s remarkable to see how overtakes occur and then, contradicting themselves in the passes, which is usually infrequent.

Additionally, Hill highlighted the outstanding performance of Oscar Piastri from McLaren at the Japanese GP, who, after failing to start races in Australia and China, secured a second position from the third row of the grid. “Piastri still has a hunger for victory after not racing last year. He did a great job throughout the weekend and it’s positive to see McLaren back being competitive,” he added.

Finally, Hill reflected on the season as a whole, highlighting the diversity of brands at the front of the races and the competition among various drivers. “We’ve seen three different brands on the podium, with several drivers who could be winners; that is really exciting,” he concluded.
