Recently, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has reignited rumors surrounding NASCAR with a surprising post on his X account (previously known as Twitter). He has reshared a message from Trackhouse Racing from the year 2023, announcing Zane Smith as the team’s new driver.
Although Smith and Trackhouse later parted ways after a brief stint with Spire, speculation began to flourish again. The team is looking for a new driver for the 2028 season, after Connor Zilisch recently signed with Hendrick Motorsports.
However, the expectations generated were not based on solid ground. Earnhardt acknowledged that he did not realize his post referred to an old announcement, mistakenly thinking that Trackhouse had re-signed Smith, who currently competes for Front Row Motorsports.
In his podcast Bless Your ‘Hardt with his wife Amy, he shared the details. He commented that a retweet of that old announcement seemed appropriate as a response to Zilisch’s case, without realizing that it was three years old. “I didn’t look at the date… I just checked Trackhouse’s account to make sure it wasn’t a parody account,” he said.
Furthermore, he pointed out the irony of the main comment in that original post, which was from Carson Hocevar, who had congratulated Smith on his ‘signing’. Currently, the relationship between Smith and Hocevar is tense, which has added a bitter taste to the situation.
