David Coulthard, former Formula 1 driver, has expressed his concern over the possible impact that excessive FIA regulation may have on the technical innovation of the championship. According to him, restricting the development of unique engineering could affect the essence of F1.

In a recent episode of the podcast Up To Speed, Coulthard commented on the flexible rear wings that have been introduced by several teams this season. He pointed out that, although the FIA contemplates limiting certain aerodynamic loopholes, the creative exploitation of the regulations is a fundamental aspect that attracts fans.

“The innovations that excite us and generate debate are part of the fun of Formula 1 and help it stand out compared to other championships with less room for innovative solutions,” explained the winner of 13 grand prix races.

Coulthard also referred to the acclaimed designer Adrian Newey, who always looks for unspecified aspects in the regulations to devise solutions that can be exploited. “We hope not to lose that capability entirely,” he added.

Despite his defense of innovation freedom, Coulthard acknowledges the need for FIA intervention when real safety risks arise due to complex aerodynamic developments. “If there is an element that can be broadly developed and presents significant complexities, the organization should simplify the regulations to ensure safety,” he concluded.
