Jolyon Palmer, former Formula 1 driver and current commentator for F1 TV, states that conversations between Max Verstappen and Mercedes are becoming increasingly likely as the Dutch driver’s difficulties with his current team, Red Bull Racing, become more pronounced.
At a time when Verstappen sits in eighth place in the drivers’ championship with only eight points and his team does not seem capable of being competitive, Palmer believes the chances of the Dutchman considering a switch of brands have increased. For its part, Mercedes has started the championship dominating with two victories, including the race in Australia and China.
Despite Verstappen having confirmed his loyalty to Red Bull until 2026 and having a contract until 2028, Palmer emphasizes that the current situation of his team could make future conversations with Mercedes regain relevance.
“The conversation will happen because Red Bull will have no title options this season,” Palmer states during his F1 Nation podcast. “Max is not here to finish eighth; he wants to compete for podiums and to win.”
Palmer points out that if results do not improve, Verstappen might welcome the idea of moving to a team with a more competitive vehicle, such as Mercedes, which is undoubtedly one of the strongest teams currently in Formula 1.
