Connor Zilisch’s rookie season in the NASCAR Cup Series has not been easy. The driver of the No. 88 Trackhouse Chevrolet recorded his ninth DNF (Did Not Finish) during the last race, a result that only adds to his frustration in this tough campaign.
After 222 laps of competition, Zilisch crashed out of the race. While in a complicated situation, he watched as driver Riley Herbst crashed into the outside wall, which complicated his reaction, as his visibility was limited by the vehicle in front of him.
His spotter, Stefan Parsons, urged him to “stay low”, but Zilisch could not avoid hitting the brakes and ended up colliding with Herbst, also impacting the outside wall and becoming immobile shortly after. After the incident, Zilisch expressed his frustration over the radio, shouting: “I’m so horrible! Gosh, what am I doing!?”.
The young driver is aware of what happened: “I blocked the brakes”. The impact caused a total loss of oil pressure, putting him out of the race and finishing in 35th position.
So far, Zilisch has only completed 5,278 laps in 25 races this season, being the last among drivers of a full team, with over 600 laps fewer than the next on the list, Josh Berry. This premise lies in his struggling season, as in comparison, other rookies have had more positive performances, like Shane van Gisbergen, who recorded only four DNFs last year.
With eleven races remaining in 2026, Zilisch hopes to improve his performance before the season ends and provide a more positive closure to his rookie experience.
