The American driver Colton Herta has had a difficult start in his first participation in the FIA F2, after suffering an accident that caused the red flag during the practice session held at Albert Park in Melbourne.
With more than 25 minutes remaining to finish the session, Herta lost control of the vehicle while exiting turn 10, resulting in a collision with the curbs. The impact scattered debris across the track, forcing the marshals to stop the session.
Exiting unscathed from his Hitech team car, Herta received applause from the crowd before heading back to his garage to regroup. Several drivers caused yellow and red flags during the session, reflecting the difficulties in adapting to the urban circuit.
This debut is a significant milestone for Herta, who has had an unusual journey since his successful career in IndyCar, where he achieved nine victories and was runner-up in 2024. Recently, Cadillac named him as a test driver for this year, keeping the door open for a future opportunity in F1.
Herta will have the opportunity to showcase his potential during the qualifying session scheduled for Friday, followed by a sprint race on Saturday and the main race on Sunday.
