Cleetus McFarland Faces His First NASCAR Race at Rockingham

Cleetus McFarland, known for his popularity on social media, debuted with the number 33 from Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR O’Reilly Series this Saturday at Rockingham Speedway. Despite the difficulties, he managed to finish in 32nd place, six laps down from winner William Sawalich, in a 250-lap race marked by several incidents.

From the start, McFarland faced tricky moments, such as an initial start where he found himself between three cars and managed to save the situation. Throughout the race, he avoided collisions with other drivers and faced penalties for speeding in the pits, as well as several moments of loss of control.

After the race, McFarland described the experience as ‘the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life’, but celebrated having managed to complete the race, which was his main goal. He shared that while trying to improve on each lap, he felt excited to reach 26th position at one point, but his ambition led him to a tangle. ‘I got overconfident and ended up pushing myself’, he added.

During the race, McFarland tried to learn from his strategy, watching how his teammate Jesse Love saved tires for the next stage of the competition. ‘I’ve learned a lot, and the team mates were constantly helping me. It’s great’, he explained.

His participation at Rockingham was necessary to obtain NASCAR approval to race at Talladega later this month. Despite the difficulties in the race, he believes he has demonstrated he is up to the challenge. ‘I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but I’ve learned a lot. I hope to keep improving and next time be more competitive’, McFarland concluded, who has generated great anticipation for the next race.

The vice president of operations for the O’Reilly Series, Danny Lawrence, valued the driver’s performance, although he expressed the need for improvement. ‘Aaron made a big step, but we have work to do,’ he stated. NASCAR, on the other hand, is not completely convinced about granting approval for Talladega, highlighting the lack of a live stop during the competition.

As the race at Talladega approaches, the motorsport community will be closely watching McFarland’s development and his ability to compete against other drivers in the O’Reilly Series.
