Christopher Bell, driver of Joe Gibbs Racing, is making progress in recovering from his left wrist fracture, and for this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway, he has swapped his cast for a boot. After finishing fifth last week at Sonoma Raceway, Bell feels this has been one of the toughest tests since the accident he suffered at Michigan International Speedway.
Despite the state of his injury, Bell has reported that the pain has been minimal since the beginning, but his mobility at the wheel remains limited. “I can’t be fast and precise with the steering wheel; what I feel is an uneven sensation,” he commented. He hopes to regain full wrist mobility soon.
However, Bell has confirmed that he will return to wearing the cast the following week at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a track considered higher risk that requires more intense protection. “In Atlanta, we will go back to the cast to ensure I have the maximum protection possible,” he added.
His goal is to fully recover in two to three weeks, possibly for the races in North Wilkesboro or Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His performance at Sonoma has been a great incentive: “I feel very proud of my performance and my team. This has been a tough time, but getting a good amount of points is a great reward,” he said.
Currently, Bell is in tenth place in the championship, a position that, despite his improvement, leaves him 70 points behind the leader of the competition, as the playoffs approach. Every point earned in the upcoming races is crucial for his goal of securing a spot in the playoffs.
