Double Formula 4 champion Christian Lundgaard will graduate to the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in 2018, the Dane having decided to stay with Dutch outfit MP Motorsport, the team with which he won the Northern European and Spanish F4 titles in 2017. Lundgaard will also continue as a Renault Sport Academy driver.

oday, Lundgaard’s Formula Renault 2.0 season with MP Motorsport was announced at Renault Sport Formula One Team’s base in Enstone where Renault presented all of its 2018 Renault Sport Academy drivers. Last year, Lundgaard was added to Renault’s junior programme ahead of his motorsport career after which his strong 2017 performances led to him being re-confirmed as a Renault junior for 2018. Additionally, Lundgaard will remain being supported by Team Danmark.

The 16-year-old driver from Hedensted, Denmark, will enter his second season in single-seaters in 2018. It was obvious that after his two F4 titles Lundgaard was ready to move up to a higher level. Having taken both titles with MP Motorsport, the Dane was eager to continue their cooperation and will therefore compete in Formula Renault 2.0 with the Dutch team that also runs cars in GP3 Series and FIA Formula 2.

“This is a logical next step in my career”, said Lundgaard about being promoted to the Eurocup. “Formula Renault 2.0 is a very competitive category that will hone my racing skills to the extreme. It feels good to be able to progress together with MP Motorsport, as it adds stability in what will undoubtedly be a challenging debut season in the series. I’m convinced that our cooperation offers the right baseline from which we can be successful in my rookie year.”

“We are extremely happy that Christian will step up to Formula Renault 2.0 along with us”, said Sander Dorsman, MP Motorsport’s team manager. “We were very successful together in 2017, Christian showing his dominance in the two Formula 4 championships in which we competed. We are eager to build on that performance in our attack on the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup.”

“We are very pleased to retain Christian for another season,” said Renault Sport Academy Director Mia Sharizman. “Last year was excellent for him and it takes a lot to win two titles in one season. We are excited to see the next chapter for Christian in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup which will be highly competitive and a real challenge for him. It’s important for the hard work to continue as there is still lots to learn.”

On his way to the title in the 2017 Northern European Zone championship, Lundgaard claimed ten wins and nine poles. Dovetailing in the Spanish F4 championship, he added seven more wins and poles to his tally, claiming a second F4 title in the process.
