Venezuelan racer Johnny Cecotto took the first pole position of the year for him in GP2 Series on the Red Bull Ring, Austria.
The session opened with André Negrao set the early pace but the timesheet were improving every time with Marciello and Vandoorne who last year race here, setting the first position.
After 10 minutes of the session, Cecotto was leading the field followed by Palmer and Vandoorne. Meanwhile in the track a lot of drivers went off at 9 and 8 corners, as we saw some lock ups at turn 1.
Halfway through the session, with Abt and Trummer in the track and all drivers in the pits, the top positions were: Cecotto, Palmer, Vandoorne, Leal and Nasr.
Drivers came out to the track with 8 minutes remaining but no one have improved until Raffaele Marciello took the third place with 3 minutes to go and with some raindrops at first sector. Meanwhile, Series leader, Joylon Palmer did a spun off at final turn.
But any one couldn’t improve his lap time due to the spots of rain in the track which impeded Marciello improve the Cecotto pole position lap.
