The Spanish Formula 1 driver, Carlos Sainz, has made it clear that he does not consider his future in the championship beyond his current stint with Williams until the summer break. The driver’s contract with the Grove team ends at the end of 2026, but he has stated that he is focused on his immediate work.
Sainz joined Williams at the beginning of the 2025 season, and although he had an impressive rookie year, with points in 20 races and podiums in Baku and Qatar, this year he has found a heavy and uncompetitive car.
The driver responded with a “no, not really” when asked if he was looking at other teams. “I have too much work to do here at Williams right now. In the upcoming races and the many simulator sessions we are doing, I’ve told myself that I would like to be a bit isolated until the summer break, to help improve the situation as much as possible,” he assured.
The four-time Grand Prix winner has expressed his desire to continue with Williams and focus on the long-term goal of returning to the fight for victories. However, he acknowledges that there is still much work to be done.
Williams has planned several updates for the upcoming races with the aim of reducing the weight of the FW48 and improving its performance. The team principal, James Vowles, has stated that a medium update will arrive at the British Grand Prix this weekend, followed by more changes at Spa, Budapest, and Zandvoort.
His decision about the future will largely depend on the impact these improvements have on the car’s competitiveness.
Sainz has mentioned that he is working to identify the causes of the team’s problems and seek effective solutions. He requests that his management team maintains “the least noise possible” about his future until the situation at Williams becomes clearer, prioritizing helping the team in this recovery process.
The driver market landscape may become complicated, with contracts expiring at Audi, Racing Bulls, and Haas, and possible movements from drivers like Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso. Despite this, Sainz remains focused on his current task, intending to stay at Williams.
