Rafael Camara will make his Formula 1 debut with the Haas F1 Team during the Brazilian Grand Prix. This opportunity comes after Esteban Ocon has been sidelined from the team for the rest of the 2026 season.
The decision by the Haas team was made as a result of increasing tensions between Ocon and the team. A heated discussion during the Mexican GP was the climax that led team principal Ayao Komatsu to decide to bench Ocon. Instead, reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa competed in Mexico, scoring a point by finishing in 10th place.
As a consequence of this situation, the team has confirmed that Ocon, who becomes a free agent next season, will not return to drive for Haas. “We have notified Esteban that he will not be occupying a race seat with the TGR Haas F1 Team this season,” Komatsu stated.
Camara’s debut
Rafael Camara, who was already contracted to replace Ocon starting in 2027, will debut with the VF-26 in Interlagos. Currently, Camara is leading the Formula 2 standings and has made a positive impression during private testing with Haas.
The confirmation of his debut came on Tuesday afternoon, after Camara had already been prepared as a substitute during the Mexican GP weekend. During this event, the team opted for Hirakawa while exploring options for the remainder of the season.
Testing and preparations
This Brazilian driver has never driven a 2026 Formula 1 car, but he has been well-prepared for his debut. He has completed five test outings with previous cars, including four with Ferrari’s SF-25 and one with Haas’s VF-25, which took place last August in Portimao.
“We have chosen Rafael Camara to drive alongside Ollie Bearman at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. We know his capability and are looking forward to welcoming him to the team during his Formula 1 debut,” Komatsu stated.
The reshuffling in the driver lineup will also affect Ferrari, which has assigned Dino Beganovic to the FP1 session on Friday that was originally intended for Camara, thereby offering him a new opportunity to drive the Maranello team’s car.
