Bottas takes 2nd F1 career pole position in Austria

Großer Preis von Österreich 2017, Samstag - Steve Etherington

Valtteri Bottas has been the quickest in the qualifying session of Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix at Red Bull Ring, thanks to an early impressive lap and thanks to a final yellow flag. The Finn will start alongside Sebastian Vettel, Hamilton finished 3rd but will start 8th.

Qualifying 1 was so equal. Haas drivers this time looked so strong to advance to Q2, and that’s what it happened but, Kevin Magnussen broke his suspension due to a kerb. The Danish driver would then finish 15th, after not getting out on track during Q2.

Willams drivers after an impressive podium finish by Lance Stroll in the prior Grand Prix, had struggled a lot today. Felipe Massa and Stroll couldn’t advance to Q2, they finished 17th and 18th, respectively, only in front of Sauber’s of Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein. As usual, Renault driver, Jolyon Palmer didn’t advance to Q2 finishing in P16.

On Q2, McLaren-Honda’s progress was shown by Fernando Alonso who battle against Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz to join Q3. The 2-times-world-champion finally would finish in 12th place, just behind Nico Hulkenberg. Behind Alonso, finished his team mate, Stoffel Vandoorne and Toro Rosso of Daniil Kvyat.

In Q3 the first stint of fastest laps was the good one. Because in the second and final stint, Haas of Romain Grosjean was stopped on track causing a yellow flag, and not allowing anyone to improve their laps.

This situation was perfect for Valtteri Bottas who took his second pole position in Formula 1. He will start ahead of Ferrari’s of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen. They are followed by Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen. Grosjean will start 6th, ahead of Sergio Pérez and Lewis Hamilton – who qualified 3rd but have 5 places of penalty because of gearbox change. Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz complete the top10.
