Valtteri Bottas, driver for Cadillac Racing, has completed an exciting three-day bike ride between Malaysia and Singapore. This crossing has been an opportunity to disconnect after a challenging race at the Bahrain Grand Prix, offering, in addition, a different approach to prepare for the upcoming event.
Instead of taking the usual 360 km journey in one hour by car, Bottas accepted the suggestion of his partner, professional cyclist Tiffany Cromwell, to make the trip on his gravel bike. ‘I would like to think she said it as a joke, but it made me think: maybe I could do it,’ Bottas explained, who covered a total of 420 km during his trip.
As a cycling enthusiast, Bottas meticulously planned his routes, adjusting them to the preparation needs for the Singapore GP. The first two days were the most demanding, which ended with a smoother ride the day before the race. ‘Everything was well planned, so I wasn’t worried that this could compromise my performance,’ he commented.
One of the highlights of the trip was the experience of cycling at night through the Malaysian jungle. ‘The first two hours were the hardest due to the heat,’ he said. ‘But when it gets dark, the noise is impressive and makes your mind start to play tricks on you. I don’t know what’s out there, but we have to keep going,’ he reported excitedly.
During the journey, Bottas had multiple encounters with wildlife, including snakes and a large number of lizards. ‘At least I knew there was nothing that could hunt me, I don’t think there are tigers,’ he added with a smile, although a journalist pointed out that there are indeed tigers in this jungle.
Bottas’ trip was not only a physical test, but also a way to purge the frustrations from the previous race, helping him clear his mind before the GP. ‘I saw a lot of Malaysia in those four days and, without a doubt, without the bike I wouldn’t have had that opportunity,’ he concluded.
