Oliver Bearman, driver for the Haas Formula 1 team, recently explained his deep emotion when getting behind the wheel of the 1985 Lotus 97T, a car with which legendary Ayrton Senna achieved his first victory. This experience, held at Silverstone, generated such intense emotions in Bearman that it brought him to tears.
In an appearance on the podcast F1 Beyond The Grid, the young Brit recalled how it felt to drive the same chassis that Senna piloted in his first winning race. Bearman described this moment as ‘one of the best days of his life’, reflecting on the connection to the motorsport legend despite not having lived through his career.
The 21-year-old driver shared the track with his father and girlfriend, in addition to Senna’s former mechanic and ex-driver Karun Chandhok. ‘It was a very special chassis, and sharing it with the people who have been by my side during my development in the motorsport world was really emotional,’ Bearman commented, underscoring the uniqueness of the experience.
With an exciting story behind him, he acknowledged that he knew this day would be powerful. ‘Just knowing about my driving, I understood that the emotions would overwhelm me,’ he stated. Furthermore, he was able to complete an extra lap of the experience after ignoring the instructions to stop, thus achieving what he calls an ‘added glory lap’.
At the end of his lap, Bearman noted the warming of the Lotus brakes, a sign that he had been pushing to the limit. ‘It was incredible, I really enjoyed every moment,’ he concluded, reaffirming the impact this experience has had on his career.
