Ian James, director of the Heart of Racing team, has confirmed that Brazilian driver Eduardo ‘Dudu’ Barrichello will not make a step into prototype racing with the Aston Martin Valkyrie next season. Despite positive expectations after a great 2026 season in the GT category, James believes the time is not right for an immediate change.
James has stated that the long-term goal is to see Barrichello in the GTP, but has emphasized that 2027 could be too soon for that leap. ‘His ultimate goal is to race in prototypes and drive the Valkyrie. I think next year will probably be a year too soon,’ he commented.
Barrichello’s Progression
Despite the decision to delay his rise, Barrichello’s results have been very promising. He co-piloted an Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo in his first full year with Heart of Racing, achieving three podiums in the IMSA GTD category and finishing third in the overall standings after leading the championship for part of the season.
In the World Endurance Championship (WEC), Barrichello also added two other podium appearances. This reflects his rapid progress in the endurance racing environment, which has been a significant change after having competed as a sole driver for much of his career.
A Promising Future
The Brazilian has commented that, although his dream is to drive a hypercar, he is focusing on improving his skills in the GT category before thinking about a spot in the GTP. ‘I still believe I need to improve. There’s a lot of room to advance and that’s what I’m currently focusing on,’ Barrichello stated.
Additionally, he analyzed the challenges that endurance presents, such as adapting to teamwork with other drivers. ‘It’s a different world when you have to share the car with other people. You need to get used to that dynamic,’ he concluded.
