Auer takes maiden win in DTM

Lucas Auer switch the pole position into a victory during Race 2 of DTM at Lausitzring. The Austrian get the first victory for Mücke Motorsport in the championship. Ekström and Wickens completes the podium.

Mücke Motorsport made a one two in today’s qualifying with Auer and Vietoris who later got penalized and drop to seventh.

At the start Auer kept the lead as Wickens overtook Glock for second position, Paffett took fourth in front of Rockenfeller, after a free of crash start. “Rocky” received a drive through penalty because he started before the lights went off.

Yesterday race winner, Miguel Molina was racing on 18th, which shows the high level of the series, crashed into Augusto Farfus who had to retire. The Catalan then got a drive through penalty following this action.

On lap 16 the pit stop started and the first to stop were Wickens and Glock. A lap later, Paffet and Wittmann joined the pits. Paffet managed to went out in front of Glock who had a little problem in the pit stop.

The race leader, Lucas Auer joined the pits on lap 18, the Austrian managed to increase the gap with Wickens. Meanwhile, Mattias Ekström was in the lead, in front of Jamie Green who went off at turn 1.Third was Vietoris who joined the pits on lap 21.

Green made his pit stop on lap 22 and he rejoined the track in front of Glock. Ekström continued in the lead in front of Nico Müller, and managed to made a gap in order to overtakes as much as positions as he could.

The Swede pit on lap 32 and rejoined the race behind Paffet and Green who were battling for the final step of the podium. Paffet pace was really slow and the Audi’s overtook him easily.

So with 15 minutes remaining, Auer was leading with 6 seconds of gap with Wickens. Green was third in front of Ekström and Paffet. Wittmann was the first BMW on sixth position, in front of Vietoris, Glock, Müller and Spengler.

Müller and Spengler overtook Glock for eight and ninth, as Vietoris puts on pressure Marco Wittmann, Vietoris had the inside at turn 1 but he lock up and lost some distance with the German, when the yellow flag came into the track due to the abandon of Daniel Juncadella.

Ekström meanwhile overtook Green for third position. Wickens cut the gap with Auer to 4 seconds as Ekström follow the Canadian, who then had to defend the position. But the Mercedes was on championship mind and don’t defend the position.

So Lucas Auer won his first race in the DTM with Ekström and Wickens completing the podium. Jamie Green, Gary Paffett, Marco Wittmann, Christian Vietoris, Nico Müller, Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock completes the top 10.

In driver’s championship, Robert Wickens consistency makes him the new leader with 58 points, 3 more than Marco Wittmann. Mattias Ekström is up to third, 12 points behind Wickens.
