Audi has confirmed that it will not implement any further updates to its Formula 1 engine during the 2026 season. This decision was announced by the team’s race director, Allan McNish, who emphasizes the importance of managing resources and budget.
After acquiring the Sauber team, Audi introduced its first F1 engine this season. Although the initial results were not outstanding, the engine update presented at the Barcelona Grand Prix improved the unit’s ‘drop-off,’ according to driver Nico Hulkenberg.
Since the update in Barcelona, the team has scored points in the last three races, with Gabriel Bortoleto adding eight points and Hulkenberg contributing two, allowing Audi to advance in the constructors’ standings.
McNish explained that the next major step in engine development is expected in 2027, highlighting that the team must operate within the budget cap. ‘There is a trade-off between chassis and engine updates, and we need to manage long-term expectations,’ he commented.
Additionally, Hulkenberg noted that improvements in ‘driveability,’ important for the driving experience, take time to become noticeable. The modifications made so far have been subtler and focused on stabilizing pedal response and power delivery.
With the aim of establishing itself in the competition, Audi will continue to work on optimizing the performance of its chassis and engine during the second half of the season, but significant engine improvements will not be seen until 2027.
