Audi sets an ambitious goal for F1: to fight for the championship in 2030

The director of Audi F1, Mattia Binotto, has stated that the goal of the German brand is to compete for the Formula 1 championship before 2030, following a promising start in their debut at the competition.

Audi has taken over Sauber in the F1 grid from 2026 and, after nine races, currently holds the ninth position in the championship with six points, thanks to debuting driver Gabriel Bortoleto.

Although his teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, has yet to score points, Audi has proven to be competitive with appearances in Q2 in all races, and has managed to reach Q3 three times.

In this regard, Binotto commented on the team’s strategy, stating that they have charted a path that transcends the immediate seasons. ‘Our target is 2030: we want to build a team capable of competing for the world championship,’ he said.

The years 2026 and 2027 will be construction years for the team, with the hope of seeing a significant quality leap in 2028. ‘I am very interested in seeing the organization grow. Currently, more than 1,400 people work on the chassis and power unit,’ he added.

Binotto emphasized that the chassis improvement is already noticeable, but that the power unit is an area that requires more work. Recently, at Silverstone, the performance of Audi’s ICE showed a 4% difference compared to the benchmark of Red Bull Ford, which will allow the implementation of updates.

Moreover, Binotto is optimistic about the future of the team’s power technology. ‘I know we will start with a slight delay as we are building new skills and knowledge. I am convinced that Audi will have a top-class power unit in a couple of seasons,’ he concluded.
