The 2026 Formula 1 season kicks off with many uncertainties, but one aspect is almost certain: the Audi team, despite qualifying well, will encounter difficulties quickly during the races. Their engine has been identified as one of the main culprits for these hurdles, and the team has already admitted that there will be no quick solutions, despite the new regulations aimed at helping manufacturers with lower performance.
Specifically, during the Japanese Grand Prix, Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg qualified in eighth and thirteenth positions respectively, but by the end of the first lap, they had plummeted to thirteenth and nineteenth positions. Audi’s engine configuration, with a relatively large turbo compressor, causes drivers to experience slow accelerations as power takes time to arrive.
The team director, Mattia Binotto, expressed his concern, noting that poor starts are not an isolated phenomenon. “We need to solve this situation, as losing positions at the beginning is not acceptable, especially after having achieved a good qualification,” said Binotto.
Limited Opportunities for Improvement
The situation is complicated for Audi, as their options to modify the engine are restricted, especially in a season where the integrations between chassis and engine are very tight. The ADUO (Additional Development and Improvement Opportunities) regime implemented by the FIA allows for certain concessions, but these do not constitute an immediate solution. Engines that finish between 2% and 4% below the reference can make only one specific change, while those exceeding 4% have access to more flexibility.
Binotto underscored the importance of having patience, as advances in engine development are long processes. “We are aware that our goal is to compete for world titles from 2030 onwards, and that will take time,” he commented. Despite the team’s ambition, it was clear that miracles are not expected in the short term.
With the first assessment points of the ADUO scheduled for early June during the Monaco Grand Prix, Audi must face its challenges with a long-term strategy. Their rivals, such as Ferrari, already have advantages that will not be easy to recover.
