Aston Martin limits its drivers to 25 laps to avoid nerve damage

Aston Martin faces a serious handicap for the Australian Grand Prix, as it has limited its drivers’ capacity to complete only 25 laps per session. This decision was made to prevent possible nerve damage to the drivers due to the severe vibrations generated by the Honda engine.

The team director, Adrian Newey, stated that the vibrations emitted by the engine are so intense that they have affected the reliability of the AMR26, with cases of repeated damage to the engine’s battery unit. During preseason testing, various reliability issues limited the car’s performance, highlighting the severity of the situation.

According to Newey, both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have expressed that they can only complete a limited number of laps before suffering what could become permanent damage to their nerves. In the case of Alonso, he has stated that he cannot exceed 25 laps, while Stroll has limited his activity to 15 consecutive laps.

Despite the difficulties, the technical director has pointed out that they have implemented solutions to reduce vibrations during the weekend, but he acknowledges that the engine remains the main source of these problems. “The chassis, which is a rigid structure, has not been able to effectively mitigate these vibrations,” Newey emphasized.

The situation is concerning, as there is no defined timeline to resolve the issues related to the Honda engine’s vibrations. The team is confident in the performance potential of its car, but the effect of the vibrations could seriously compromise its performance during the competition.
