MotoGP support series Asia Talent Cup has lost one of its rider as Afridza Munandar has sadly passed away after a crash at Sepang International Circuit.
The incident occurred at Turn 10 on Lap 1 of the 2019 Asia Talent Cup’s final weekend’s Race 1 at Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia. Championship contender Munandar started the race from the second row of the grid in fifth position.
Before they settled in, Munandar had a collision with Japanese rider Shinji Ogu as the race was immediately red-flagged, owing the gravity of the incident. The 20-year-old Indonesian received medical attention at the track but was then transferred to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
But Munandar has been pronounced dead despite the best efforts of circuit medical staff and those at the hospital after he succumbed to the injuries, which hasn’t been disclosed by the statement released by FIM, Dorna Sports and Asia Talent Cup organisers.
The Indonesian was a front-runner in the championship, sitting in third place prior to the final weekend in Malaysia. He accumulated two wins, two second place and two third place finishes with 142 points in all, in the five completed rounds.
The statement passed condolences from everyone involved in motorcycle community: “The FIM, Dorna Sports, and all those in the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup pass on our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Munandar.”
