Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the current championship leader of Mercedes, faced a difficult day during the British Grand Prix, where a communication error frustrated his victory aspirations. Martin Brundle, former Formula 1 driver and analyst for Sky Sports, highlighted this situation as a learning opportunity for the young Italian driver.
The weekend at Silverstone had started promisingly for Antonelli, who achieved his first victory in the sprint race on Saturday, overtaking Lewis Hamilton decisively on the Hangar straight. Additionally, he secured pole position for the main race on Sunday, seemingly destined for another great result.
Despite starting the race from pole and dropping to third place behind Charles Leclerc and Hamilton, Antonelli showcased great strategy, extending his first stint a total of 10 laps longer than the Ferrari driver. However, his plan collided with reality on lap 41, when one of his wheel shields became dislodged.
Brundle noted that Antonelli did not clearly communicate his problems to the team, complicating his re-entry into the pits. ‘It was heartbreaking for him, but it’s a lesson he needs to learn; he didn’t provide enough information about his difficulties before returning to the pits,’ Brundle wrote in his article.
After a nose and front wing change, Antonelli returned to the track, but the dislodged shield continued to block his steering, forcing him to pit again two laps later.
Despite this setback, Antonelli managed to regain a good pace and, with his eyes on the championship points, remained in the fight, but ultimately finished in 15th place after a track limits penalty.
Brundle also criticized the regulations regarding track limits penalties, arguing that these should only be applied when a driver gains a competitive advantage, not in situations where the car is affected by mechanical problems.
