Lewis Hamilton starts the championship in the same way as he finishes, taking a victory over Nico Rosberg who finishes on second place. Sebatsian Vettel takes his first podium with Ferrari.
The Australian Grand Prix had start in a strange way. We knew that Manor wasn’t going to race but we didn’t know that Bottas, Kvyat and Magnussen weren’t going to race too. Bottas had a back problems and he communicates one hour before the race that he wasn’t going to compete. Magnussen and Kvyat had engine problems before the starting grid process.
On the start, with only 15 cars, Hamilton made a good job to lead the field after turn 1, Rosberg followed him as Vettel and Räikkönen contact and made crash Pastor Maldonado. This caused the safety car appearance. Ericsson change his tyres and Romain Grosjean also pits but it was to retire.
After the safety car came in, Sainz lost several positions after see that Nasr, Ricciardo and Raikkonen overtook him, this made Sainz to run on eight place. Then Raikkonen loses a lot of time in the battle for 6th with Ricciardo, and he decided to stop soon but the Finn driver lost a lot of time in the pits after a problem in the left rear tyre. Even the problems he overtook Ricciardo thanks to pit stop strategy. Ferrari also did a great strategy to pass Felipe Massa for third place.
Also a great job from the McLaren-Honda of Jenson Button who battle for 12th place with Sergio Pérez. The British driver was showing a great performance if we think that on the pre-season, this car only made 12 laps. The 2009 champion was able to do this and more.
Sainz had a lot of problems in the pits, it was the same problems that Raikkonen had but the Spanish driver had lose almost a minute.
On lap 30, Hamilton continues in the lead of the race followed by Rosberg, Vettel, Massa, Raikkonen, Verstappen (didn’t pit at that moment), Nasr, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg and Ericsson on top 10.
Verstappen stopped on lap 33 following his strategy, but the Dutch driver had to retire after engine problems.
Raikkonen also have to retire after his second pit stop. He did an amazing job to came back to fight for 4th place but he have to retire.
Then we didn’t have a lot of action or highlight things, Button had gearbox problems but he finished the race, Rosberg have closed the gap with Hamilton and Ericsso did the same with Sainz in the battle for 8th place. Ericsson with 2 laps remaining overtook the Toro Rosso driver.
But it’s all about Mercedes who wins another race, the first this season. Great way to start the championship for the 2014 champion, Lewis Hamilton. Nico Rosberg get along with second place. Vettel makes his first podium with Ferrari.
