The 2026 season of Formula 1 has begun with an intriguing race in Melbourne, where George Russell achieved victory, establishing himself as one of the favorites for the title. The Mercedes driver was closely followed by Kimi Antonelli, but the expectations regarding the German team’s advantage have sparked debate among fans and experts.
The new F1 seems to be a radically different championship and the drivers have expressed their discontent with the new rules, which they find too complex and bewildering. Traditional fans have shown concern about how the vehicles behave on straights and the way to accelerate and brake. Nevertheless, some argue that this first event might not be representative, as the Albert Park circuit is considered one of the most demanding for the new vehicles.
Despite everything, the race had entertaining moments, with the first laps offering a good spectacle, demonstrating that the competition still has the potential to surprise spectators.
As for the competition, although Mercedes secured a double victory, with a standout performance from Russell, Ferrari‘s performance indicates that the battle for the title could be closer than expected. Conversely, McLaren‘s performance has been concerning, as Lando Norris suffered excessive tire wear, revealing that the team might face difficulties on future circuits.
Undoubtedly, Oscar Piastri didn’t have good luck in this edition, as he suffered an accident on the third turn that prevented him from participating in his season-opening race in front of the local crowd. After a complicated year, Piastri urgently needs to improve his performance to avoid falling behind.
Meanwhile, Aston Martin remains in a critical situation. The lack of reliability of their vehicle, due to issues with the Honda engine, has been a significant obstacle, preventing the drivers from completing a full race. Team principal Adrian Newey admitted that the expectations for upcoming races are not optimistic, with confidence in a potential improvement in the medium term.
On the other hand, Arvid Lindblad successfully debuted, finishing in eighth place after a solid performance. The young driver has proven that he can compete with the best, including world champion Max Verstappen, and his future in F1 looks promising.
