Fernando Alonso says it was better than a dream to score points in F1 Singapore GP, as he notes that they don’t even have Top 10 pace.
While Lance Stroll struggled to score, Aston Martin teammate Alonso managed to hang on well in the Top 10 in F1 Singapore GP not just at the start but by the end too. He even managed to hold off Charles Leclerc for long, while himself being in the DRS of Nico Hulkenberg.
He made a good start and found himself in seventh behind Hulkenberg and ahead of Leclerc and Franco Colapinto. For the whole of his first stint, he hung on to seventh until the late move from the Monegasque when he pitted. He lost couple of places to the Ferrari cars via strategy.
Both Leclerc and Carlos Sainz got ahead of him, but crucially he got the better of Hulkenberg himself to gain a place on him to be eighth. The result felt like a dream for him as he thinks the realistic pace of Aston Martin is that to finish around 15th and or 16th in the order.
He also believed that Ferrari should have won the race considering the pace they had. “Absolutely, behind the Top 4 teams and behind Checo, so normally ninth and 10th is available but finishing eighth is a little bit better than our best dream,” said Alonso to media.
“Again, good points but still one lap behind, not great pace, difficult car to drive whole weekend, so we are just lucky that we got points but it was possible to be P15 and have the same feeling. I just tried to follow Nico and tried to undercut him at one point but the Ferrari…they should have won this race probably. They were the fastest car this weekend, so it was not my race.
“I mean, we should be P15 and P16, we are eighth and two seconds behind Ferrari, so I don’t know if I can do more. I can win the race but not today,” summed up Alonso, who reckons the upcoming races will be difficult on normal circuits after street courses limited the advantage of others.
“Yeah, probably, the last street track in Baku and Singapore gave us an opportunity but I think now we need to raise the level, we have some new parts coming in the next few races, hopefully they help to come back on a more strong performance,” said Alonso.
