Mike Krack expands on the radio message by Fernando Alonso in F1 Saudi Arabian GP, as they both add on a Top 5 finish.
Having qualified well, Aston Martin were hoping to convert it in the race where they are lacking a bit this year. In Bahrain, they dropped down the order but in F1 Saudi Arabian GP, they managed it well especially with Alonso after Lance Stroll’s accident.
The safety car did help Alonso to stretch out a bit and gamble from others allowed him to maintain fifth in the order ahead of the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris. “I feel great,” he said. “I feel a little more uncomfortable now. The race was good. The pace was better than Bahrain.
“Still, I think we are faster on qualifying than the race but we could fight with the McLarens and the Mercedes. I think the Red Bull and Ferrari are still one step ahead but I was comfortable with the car and happy with the race. It is a small step in the right direction, but we still need to make another step especially on race pace.
“We took advantage also on the Safety Car, Hamilton and Norris could not stop at the same time as their team mates and we capitalise on that. Also Carlos with the injury, so P5, it tastes really good and we go on to Australia,” summed up Alonso, who had a teasing moment as well on the radio regarding the team’s strategy.
He was toying up with the team simply. “He asked for the Plan B basically, “Is there a Plan B?’ and we know Fernando is always teasing you – and you have to be careful if he is being honest about it,” said Krack to media. “Because he knows all the strategies, he knows where all the field is, and sometimes he maybe even does it on purpose because he knows the competitors are listening.
“He always wakes us up – as soon as you think you can breathe for one lap, there comes a radio call: ‘What about Plan B?’ We had a look at Plan B but told him: ‘You will not finish where you are with it’. I don’t know if it was intentional. We were not in great shape again in the beginning of the Hards. It was only coming later when the car got better. And that’s something as I said also for the for the medium stint, we were not great at the beginning.”
