Alex Palou has achieved a new success in the IndyCar championship, having won the Grand Prix of Portland and extending his lead in the standings to 110 points, consolidating his leadership position.
The 29-year-old Spanish driver arrived at this weekend with an 83-point lead, but his dominant performance aboard the #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda allowed him to increase that margin to 27 points with only five races left to run.
Palou has expressed that he feels ‘more comfortable’ now that his position at the top of the championship is more solid. ‘Every week we fight to do well, and that includes this weekend. Nevertheless, it is a new circuit for us,’ the driver commented.
Despite his considerable lead, Palou has warned that there are still many points at stake and that the competition is intense. ‘We cannot relax. If we have the opportunity to win, we must take it,’ he added, highlighting that each victory brings a significant amount of points.
The victory in Portland, marking the 25th of his career and the third at this circuit, came as a result of a well-executed strategy during the pit stops, where he was able to cut the gap with the initial leader, Felix Rosenqvist.
Palou led 60 of the 110 laps, once again showcasing his strength and control during the race. ‘I was lucky that my car was running very well, and that allowed me to establish a fast pace and compete for the lead,’ he explained.
With a focused attention on maintaining his form and preventing the current series from gaining momentum, Palou is aware that every day is essential to continue fighting for the title. ‘Every day we remember our luck. We have no guarantee that this situation is permanent,’ he concluded.
