The MotoGP rider, Alex Marquez, is considering advancing surgery for his fractured right collarbone, injured during the race at the Catalonia Grand Prix in May. This decision could lead to him missing the upcoming GP of Qatar.
Marquez, who competes with Gresini Racing, is contemplating flying directly from Kuala Lumpur to Madrid, where he could undergo the procedure on Tuesday. The plate he has implanted has been causing him significant discomfort in recent weeks, with a MotoGP calendar that does not allow for much rest between races.
Initially, he had scheduled the operation for the end of the season, but he has confirmed that he is now reviewing the options. ‘We are analyzing the options with Dr. Samuel Antuna, as it is not just the plate; there are other aspects as well,’ he commented, referring to the bursitis he has developed in the injured area.
Marquez has been receiving injections at every race since his comeback after the accident in Barcelona. ‘The truth is that I have had many difficulties,’ he stated. The accident in Barcelona was very impactful, and his collarbone was operated on quickly, which made the first procedure rushed to try to get him back on the track as soon as possible.
The rider has also confirmed that he will change teams next season, moving to the official KTM team. His priority is to recover fully before the last two races of the season in Portimao and Valencia, as well as to be present at the test on December 1 in Valencia, where he will be able to ride the KTM prototype of 850 cc under the new regulations of 2027.
Marquez started the Malaysian GP from pole position and led the first three laps before falling, despite appearing to be in good shape for victory. After analyzing the accident, he commented: ‘It was a small error, but in these hot conditions and with such low grip, everything was on the limit.’ However, he assured that the fall did not worsen his existing injury.
