The Spanish rider Alex Marquez, from the Gresini Racing team, has shared his thoughts on a curious crash that occurred during the practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix. The incident caused a red flag and interrupted the session while riders were trying to improve their lap times.
Marquez fell after exiting the first corner of the Spielberg circuit, when his Ducati lost control due to a small wheelie. The accident took place just a few minutes before the end of practice, leaving the riders with less than 12 minutes to return to the track.
Despite the crash, Marquez was unhurt and managed to record a time among the top ten with his spare bike after the resumption. According to him, the cause of the accident was a problem with the brakes. ‘The brakes were a bit stuck at that moment. When the front end comes back to the ground after a wheelie, everything has to be perfect to avoid a crash,’ the rider explained.
Marquez described the crash as unexpected and pointed out that his body was not prepared to face such a situation. ‘It’s not a nice crash because you don’t expect it and your body isn’t ready for it. But everything is fine,’ he indicated.
Additionally, Marquez had another incident during the morning session when a piece of his fairing detached, causing them to go off the track. Despite the difficulties, the rider seeks to maintain a broad perspective, acknowledging that the most important thing is how the weekend ends. ‘It doesn’t matter how it starts, but how it ends. So we will try to turn things in our favor.’
