In an intense race at Phillip Island, Alex Márquez chose not to attempt to overtake his brother Marc Márquez during the Australia Grand Prix sprint, considering that doing so would be too risky given the importance of the race for the title.
During the event, which took place on Saturday, the Gresini rider managed to get close to the battle between championship rivals, Marc and Jorge Martín. On the eighth lap, Alex positioned himself near the two, but he did not take the risk of making an overtaking move at a critical moment.
With Martín’s retirement, Alex stayed behind his brother until the end of the race, finishing second with a distance of only three tenths from the leader.
After the race, Alex admitted that he preferred not to make the move to avoid compromising his brother’s title chances. ‘From the beginning I felt good, with a good pace. But it was too risky to overtake him, especially considering he was vying for a title,’ he explained.
During the course of the race, Alex had an initial battle with Johann Zarco, but soon regained his position. Although he felt he could be faster, he acknowledged that the energy expended to close the gap with Marc had taken its toll at the end of the race.
The dominance of Ducati became evident as all three riders from the brand occupied the podium, while Aprilia, which had started the weekend with good performance, was relegated. Alex pointed out that, although the Ducatis dominated, Aprilia still has an advantage in certain corners, which he could observe from behind during the race.
‘The more the race progressed, the more I saw Jorge and Marc fighting, and that made me feel there were opportunities ahead,’ he concluded.
